Local Church Votes to Share Vacant Land with Nonprofits
Heart of the Rockies Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) plans to share several acres of undeveloped land at the northwest corner of Trilby and Lemay with local nonprofit organizations. The church currently occupies about two acres of the 11-acre property. It has long been the church’s goal to develop the remaining property to benefit the greater community.
Following a year-long process that began with a Request for Proposals, three primary partners have been selected to join in a collaborative effort to develop the property — CARE Housing, Fort Collins Habitat for Humanity and Friends of L’Arche Fort Collins. “We are excited to move forward with these partners in an atmosphere of mutual trust, common values and a shared vision,” said Rev. Melissa St. Clair, Senior Minister of Heart of the Rockies Christian Church. “We exist to serve others. Our hope is to create a thriving community that addresses the church’s space needs and also serves those beyond our congregation by providing vital services.”
By partnering with CARE Housing and Habitat for Humanity, the church hopes to support the City of Fort Collins’ stated vision of providing its residents with healthy, stable housing they can afford, St. Clair explained. “Together, we imagine a diverse, inclusive community that can live and thrive on this property, anchored by a community center that will be shared with the partnership’s residents, the church and its current mission partners, and others.”
The selection of partners is just the beginning of the process — to follow are site studies, community engagement, a collaborative design process, and navigating all processes required by the City. The church anticipates a three-to-five-year timeline for the development.
